Keep Your Job

Keep Your JobKeep Your JobThere are risks to checking out of your job prematurely. There are even rewards for overperforming during uncertain times.Have you ever noticed how many people, when faced with the possibility of a layoff or reduction in force (RIF), start acting as if its a foregone conclusion?Every chance they get, they search through online postings, network with people they havent talked to in years and actively look for a new position. In other words, they behave as if they are going to lose their jobs. Why preparing for the worst is not the best strategyTo many people, the prepare-for-the-worst approach is a valid way to deal with the uncertainty of a layoff. Even Dale Carnegie, in his book How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, talks about a strategy in which people accept the worst that can possibly happen as a way to eliminate worry. In certain circumstances, this approach makes sense. A potential layoff is not one of those times. That may seem like an extreme stance, so let me explain. I am not saying you should shut your eyes, ignore the facts and hope the nightmare stops before your paycheck does. Instead, I firmly support having a contingency plan for any given circumstance. But the issue in this case is not about planning its about focus.Henry Ford once said, Whether you think you can or think you cant, youre right.Had he been talking about the likelihood of having your job eliminated in a RIF, Ford might have said, Whether you think you will or you think you wont, youre right. One could argue that Fords thinking wouldnt apply to a potential layoff because you wouldnt seem to be the one in control. I disagree. You have a lot more power than you realize. That doesnt mean you can always think your way into saving your job. But it does mean you have to be careful how you think. You also have to be conscious of the behaviors you adopt as a result. In essence, what Ford was talking about is The Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction states that whatever you give attention, energy, and focus to will become part of your reality. Ford talked about thoughts, but he was really talking about beliefs. Your mind is a lot more powerful than you might imagine. If you truly believe something is possible, your mind will find a way to make it happen. Conversely, if you dont believe in your heart in a particular possibility, you arent likely to play any role in making that a reality.Taking this one step further, it isnt hard to imagine how giving attention, energy and focus to the possibility of losing your job might eventually detract from your performance. At the very least, you cant think about two things at once. You cant think about losing your job and focus on doing the best job possible. You have to pick one.Applying this to a potential layoff, ask yourself this questionHow might your behavior be different if you knew with 100% certainty your job would not be eliminated? How would you focus the time and energy you are now spending in your job search to improve your performance in your current position? If you find yourself worrying about the future and complaining about the way the company is handling the situation, what would be a more constructive way to channel that attention and energy? How might your relationships with your co-workers be different if you didnt feel you were somehow competing with them in a game of corporate musical chairs?Take a few minutes to reflect on these questions. With minimal effort, you will quickly realize how many opportunities you may be missing. This is the time to take action. And remember to weigh the risks of checking out of your job prematurely With the number of companies affected by recession, any opportunity in your same industry may simply be trading one set of issues for another. Whatever the case, be sure you are running toward a legitimate opportunity. If you do decide to take another position, be aware that you may find yourself in the unenviable position of being t he last partie hired before your new company has to make its own difficult decisions. So, when you evaluate other opportunities, remember There is probably no different from here.In short, start acting like and believing your job is safe. Even if you dont see the possibility in this right now, suspend disbelief and give it a shot. You have absolutely nothing to lose. Dont dedicate your attention, energy and focus to worry, uncertainty and frustration. Instead, find ways to demonstrate those valuable qualities for which the company probably hired you in the first place.

How to Get Your Groove Back

How to Get Your Groove Back How to Get Your Groove Back Too many of us are hung up on what we dont have, cant have, or wont ever have. We spend too much energy being down when we could use that same energy - if not less of it - doing, or at least trying to do, some of the things we really want to do. Terry McMillan In the popular book by Terry McMillan, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, the main character has a hard time staying in the moment and her mind is always racing to the things she needs to do, should be doing, or wants to be doing. She laments she is tired of running, tired of jumping. One description of the movie summarizes both the main plot and describes groove in this way: Stella takes personal inventory of her life to try to find a balance between her desire for love and companionship, and the responsibilities of mother and corporate executive. Venise Wagner, San Francisco Examiner Losing your groove generally refers to losing your focus, drive, passion, or ability to get the things done that give you pleasure or a sense of meaningful purpose in life. Examples include: You are still interested in your partner, but lifes distractions keep you from making time for them; You still enjoy hobbies but push them aside for other things;Your focus or edge seems to have softened and you pursue things that bring you pleasure less passionately. In short, getting your groove back means putting the pleasure back into a duty-driven life. Some might say getting your groove back is just a more poetic way of referring to ?work-life balance. How to Determine If You Are Depressed, or If Youve Just Lost Your Groove One key difference between simply losing your groove and suffering from depression is the degree of your symptoms. If your symptoms keep you from doing the things you want to in life or have caused you to lose desire, or the ability to experience pleasure or joy, you may be suffering from depression. For example, if you are unable to get out of bed in the morning because you are so tired or overwhelmed by life, it could be a sign of depression. Feeling like you are not getting all out of life that you want can be a depressing thought; you may be frustrated that there are not enough hours in the day, or you feel bound to duty and obligations first, but it does not necessarily mean you are suffering from depression. If you simply have lost focus, or your life is so cluttered with daily grind items that you cannot seem to get a grip on things, you may just need a new plan for organization, a better support system, or even a life coach. Although a life out of control can be a sign of depression, it can also be a sign your life is just chaotic and disorganized. Depression often feels overwhelming and is associated with I cant... and can lead to intense negative emotions and feelings of guilt or of being powerless. Depression may be triggered by outside events (such as change or loss), an illness, or even hormone imbalances, but it is the forces inside your heart and mind that prevent you from doing or enjoying things in life. Losing your groove is more along the lines of wanting to get something done, but lacking the motivation, time, or focus. The distractions, forces and pressures of life are the major culprits for not putting your needs first you have not necessarily lost your desire to do certain things, you just feel compelled do other things instead.

How to Build a Culture of Accountability

How to Build a Culture of Accountability How to Build a Culture of Accountability A culture of accountability is an organization of accountable employees. Results are communicated and understood by everybody. Accountability is determined proactively, before the fact, not reactively, after the fact. When a mistake is made, the response is not finger pointing and excuses â€" it is about solving the problem and learning from mistakes. Every employee feels a sense of ownership for organizational results and will do what it takes to achieve those results. Now, who wouldn’t want to work in that kind of culture? Even more importantly, how do you create a culture of accountability? It starts and ends with leadership! Leaders - starting at the top, and at all levels â€" will send a clear and consistent message (good or bad) about “how we do things around here”. So, what can leaders do to encourage a culture of accountability? Walk the Talk Nowadays, organizations are so afraid of lawsuits that they won’t admit mistakes. That kind of excuse making and blaming others will cascade down and permeate throughout the organizations. When a leader can stand before their employees and say “I made a mistake â€" and this is what we’re going to do to fix it” it sets a positive example of accountable behavior that employees won’t be afraid to emulate. Define Results and Expectations Don’t wait for a mistake to happen and then waste energy finding who is to blame. Instead, set clear standards and expectations before the work even starts. Then, make sure all employees are aware of and understand what results the organization is trying to achieve and what the expectations are for all employees. Every employee should have a “line of sight” to the organization’s desired results. Gain Commitment Without commitment, we get compliance  or even resistance. “I’ll try” is not commitment. Ask: “Do I have your commitment?”, and listen to any concerns. Work with the employee to overcome barriers and figure out what needs to do to obtain their commitment. Be Open to Feedback and Problem Solving In other words, never “shoot the messenger”.  Have an open-door environment where any employee is empowered to bring any problem to anyone in the organization without fear of repercussion. Hire Accountable Employees Don’t just hire for technical skills and experience, hire for cultural fit. Look for a track record of admitting mistakes and overcoming obstacles. Coach Employees on How to Be Accountable Many individuals come from backgrounds where they never had to be accountable. They are used to awards for 5th place. They may have to learn new skills and behaviors, like critical thinking and problem before they can begin to thrive in a culture of accountability. Consequences and Reinforcement Ultimately, there has to be consequences for consistently poor performance and reinforcing for positive results and behaviors. Without this, employees will soon catch on that accountability is all talk and no action. Hold Each Other Accountable ? In a culture of accountability, leaders don’t just hold employees accountable for results. Everyone holds everyone accountable! Every employee takes ownership of organizational results, not just their own little part of the world. Again, leaders can role model, teach, and reinforce this kind of ownership mentality. Culture will change in a positive way when leaders consistently practice these 8 principles. If they won’t or can’t, then perhaps it’s time to find new leaders.

Self-care is not selfish

Self-care is not selfish Self-care is not selfish The speedy, ever-efficient, and output-based work has only one consequence: burnout. “We’ve all been there: you push yourself to the point that you can’t take anymore so you just give up. Self-care helps you avoid getting to that point,”  writes  Kristin Wong of Lifehacker.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Self-care isn’t just important, it’s crucial.A recent  Gallup poll  found that Companies are facing an employee burnout crisis. And it’s costing our health to the tune of $100+ billion per year.“Today, for billions of knowledge workers, work means using your head and your heart - not your hands. Doing that for eight straight hours daily is mentally and emotionally exhausting in a way that assembly line work just isn’t,”  writes  Dominic Price of Atlassian.Over time, the intense cognitive load takes a toll if you don’t stop and do something intentional about it to change the pace and direction of your life.Self-care is the opposite of overwhelmed. In short, self-care is care provided for you, by you,  says  Deborah Serani Psy.D.Psychologists have spent decades helping people feel better and counter the stresses and strains of everyday life.Without the restorative power of self-care, you won’t be able to escape the vicious circle in our busy, modern world.Self-care as a tool allows you to take responsibility for your own physical, emotional, psychological and social needs.Self-care is recharging your body as reliably as you charge your iPhone. It means turning off the tv and going to bed on time to get good sleep. Self-care means making exercise a priority. It means eating more healthy foods and drinking more water. It means investing in resources to improve your life and career. Self-care is saying no when it matters, to be prepared for a better yes when next time.Self-care is not something you do once in a while to regain your sanity. It’s what you do every day, every week, month in and month out to stay.Self-care isn’t a guilty pleasure; it’s an important part of your wellness. It’s a preventative measure that can help you overcome the stress of life. Without it, we can’t give as much of ourselves to our audience, customers, clients and those we care about. The elements of life that improve our total well-being including focusing on high-value work, declining low-impact tasks, managing attention, exercise, a better sleep schedule, quality time with close relations should not be taken lightly. It pays to find calm in your hectic life.Unless we recognize that time spent recharging, replenishing, and restoring your energy counts as productive time, burnout is only going to get worse. The  Gallup  study says job burnout accounts for an estimated $125 billion to $190 billion in health-care spending each year and has been attributed to type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, gastrointestinal issues, h igh cholesterol and even death for those under the age of 45.”Burnout is becoming an epidemic. The excessive hard work habit is already bad enough in Japan that there is now  legislation in place  to limit the number of hours employees can be expected to work and require workers to take at least five vacation days a year.Self-care is a preventative action but millions of people ignore it when other things, and people, vie for their time and attention. They only embrace more self-care habits when something tragic happens.Self-care is a long-term pursuit that self-knowledge and courage.“Self-care is a discipline. It requires tough-mindedness, a deep and personal understanding of your priorities, and a respect for both yourself and the people you choose to spend your life with,”  writes  Tami Forman of Forbes.A self-care challengeTo prioritize self-care, challenge yourself to explore more ways to take care of your self in the next 30 days whilst you still focus on delivering your b est work every day.To make the process easy to adopt, you can prioritise some of these activities in your schedule: take a long evening walk, dance to good music, enjoy a good meal with close relations, go to your favourite coffee shop and order a special drink and mindfully enjoy it, take piano, drawing or painting lessons, read (reread) your favourite book, start a journaling habit, sit in nature, or do a relaxing activity you’ve always wanted to do.Aim for activities that are not triggers for other tasks. Plan to be present and aware of what is driving your actions. When you create a self-care plan, you are saving yourself from being completely sucked into a cycle that only ends in stress. You deliberately fill your plan with your favorite self-care activities.Commit to doing something purely for its self-care benefit at least once a week - although daily would be better if you can invest at least 15 minutes daily. You can even keep a “self-care journal” and record the steps you are taking each day to recharge and replenish. You can also document what’s working and not working for you to improve or change when necessary. In a  study  from the journal Advances in Psychiatric Treatment  researchers found that journaling for 15â€"20 minutes helped study participants cope with traumatic, stressful, or emotional events.Make sure your approach to self-care is well rounded. If you tend towards over-allocating time toward work, develop a time budget and create time for self-care activities.Once you understand the size of your time budget, you can allocate both work and personal care activities better.Add self-care activities in your daily or weekly schedule, and remember to start small to make it a habit. Focus on something you will consistently enjoy. The process is more important than the goal. Use a reminder if it helps. It’s a practice that is ongoing, life long, and requires constant attention and intention. If you don’t enjoy it, you will stop.“Living a healthy lifestyle because you “should” is not sustainable. You won’t enjoy it, you won’t find satisfaction in it, and you won’t be able to sustain it,”  says  Erin Bahadur.Key takeawayTaking care of your basic physical and emotional needs should really be the backbone for getting stuff done.Learning to care for yourself in a busy world can be a daunting process. Expect some setbacks, but accept them and move towards a healthier relationship with yourself.Learn to treat yourself with respect, and listen to what your body needs and wants. Poor self-care has damaging consequences on your health.Self-care isn’t one-size-fits-all. Do more of what works for you. Make it personal. Make your needs a priority to be better prepared to help others. This article first appeared on Medium.

Job Specific Interview Questions and Answer Tips

Job Specific Interview Questions and Answer Tips Job Specific Interview Questions and Answer Tips Can you do the job? At the forefront of any hiring managers mind when conducting job interviews, job specific interview questions are designed to measure a candidates ability to perform the duties of the job against the skill set required to execute the position effectively. This type of interview question, however it may be asked, is especially important for jobs where you need technical knowledge or where the company needs an experienced candidate who can do the job from the first day. What Are Job Specific Interview Questions? Job specific interview questions are designed to determine if you have the knowledge and skills needed to perform the job for which you are being considered. When you respond, your goal is to show that you are the best fit for the job out of all the applicants the employer is interviewing. In addition to hard-and-fast skills, the employer will also explore whether you have the right mindset for the job and can help achieve the companys goals. Tips for Answering Job Specific Interview Questions Check the Job Requirements. Before you go to an interview, check the job requirements listed in the job posting to which you responded. Make a list of the skills you have that match those requirements. Review the list prior to the interview, and if you need a cheat sheet jot down the list on the notepad you bring to the interview with you. Show What You Know. Show the interviewer that you know how to do the job by giving specific examples of hands-on knowledge you have when responding to interview questions. When you respond with actual on-the-job experiences and situations you have encountered at work, youre showing the interviewer what you know instead of just saying you can do the job. Showcase Your Skills. The company has a specific skill set in mind. Thats why you were selected for an interview. The skills you listed on your resume and mentioned in your cover letter got you the interview. Be sure that you know exactly whats on your resume or CV and the information you entered if you filled out a job application. Highlight the most relevant skills during your interview. Capitalize on Credentials. Do you have a degree or have you taken coursework in the field? Do you have certifications or special training for the job? Be sure to mention your credentials during the interview. Knowledge really is power when it comes to job interviews, and the more you can relay what you know, the better your chances of being invited for a second interview and ultimately getting a job offer. Be Honest. Regardless of how much you want the job, be honest and dont say you know how to do something if you dont. If you dont have all the required skills or educational requirements the company may be willing to train you. If not, the job isnt going to be a good fit, and its going to be a challenge to succeed in the role at the company. Its better to pass on a job than it is to fail and end up losing it because you werent qualified. Take the time to thoroughly prepare for your job interviews. Review both the general interview questions asked of all candidates for employment and job specific interview questions. Consider how best to respond, and be sure to have examples ready to share with the hiring manager. A little knowledge about the company itself always reflects well on your desire to become a part of what theyre doing, as well. Spring Into Happiness

Spring Into Happiness Spring Into Happiness Spring into Happiness Spring is upon us! For most of us, spring evokes familiar images of Easter eggs, flowers, and longer, warmer days to come. However, according to our members, spring is also the time of year when you’re happiest with your job. Across the country, employees report the biggest increase in job satisfaction when winter weather gives way to spring, boosting overall job happiness by 13 percent. Are you ready to be 13 percent happier? While overall job satisfaction increases across the country from winter to spring, the variance of the increase was also dependent on things like regional climate, and a person’s job industry and salary. In colder American job markets, like Boston, New York, and Chicago, working professionals are 30 percent happier to see spring come than their counterparts in warmer markets like Los Angeles, Houston, and Miami. Makes sense right? If your winter is colder, then of course you’ll be happier to see spring than someone in a warmer climate. But hold on, after further analysis, we discovered that people in colder markets report an average job satisfaction level 28 percent higher all year long than warmer markets (even those toughing it through famously cold Boston winters). Let’s look into why… Warmer job markets have a higher percentage of sales professionals Regardless of location, season, AND salary, sales professionals generally report higher levels of dissatisfaction Colder weather markets have a more even distribution of professions across their top job types Basically, more sales employees with a less diverse job market means that no matter how beautiful it is outside, that market is relatively less happy with their jobs. Ladders unearthed lots of other interesting trends; here are some highlights: Happiest Job Market: Washington, DC, Unhappiest Job Markets: Sacramento Happiest Professions: Law, Tech, and Accounting Finance Unhappiest Professions: Real Estate, Sales, and Education One more interesting trend showed that the axiom, “mo’ money mo’ problems” is actually true. Professionals making or “about to make” $100k proved to be the happiest, meaning there is a psychological factor in starting to make six figures (something employers could leverage in raises/bonus considerations), even though the difference between $90k and $100k is nominal in your take-home pay. Additionally, the trend data shows quickly diminishing returns on incremental salary as employees near the $200k mark. Across all industries, professionals reported being less happy the more money they made after $170,000 per year. Think about that: on average, professionals making $240,000 a year reported being slightly unhappier than those making $40,000. So who is the prototypical happiest worker in the country? Drumroll please…our analysis shows that a city-dwelling techie, who works in the northeast during the spring months, and makes six figures (but under $200k) is the happiest employee in the country. Why Employers Dont Respond to Cover Letters

Why Employers Dont Respond to Cover Letters Why Employers Dont Respond to Cover Letters 10 However, there are other reasons that employers may not respond, including your cover letter. In a time where hundreds of people are competing for the same job, your cover letter is as important as it has ever been. Unfortunately, there are very common- and easily fixable- mistakes that continue to keep job seekers from the “call back” pile. Here are seven common mistakes that could explain why employers don’t respond to cover letters. Incorrect Information Information that is incorrect can come in many forms. Edit your cover letter to reflect your correct name and contact information. Also, make sure that you have the employers correct information. It looks very unprofessional to send a cover letter with incorrect or different company information. Form Letter Sending form letters may sound like a great idea when submitting resumes to multiple employers. However, form letters are very informal and do not spotlight your skills based on each individual position you are applying for. Form letters can also send an unintentional message that you are not interested in the specific company or position. “I’m perfect for this job” BUT. So many cover letters include this statement but neglect to outline and highlight WHY a person is perfect for the job. Highlighting your skills, putting yourself in the spotlight, and showing how you are going to contribute to the company and the position is essential. Not Following Directions Believe it or not, a lot of cover letters do not include the information required in the job posting. Many companies require that you provide specific information or answer detailed questions. These specifics are required by the company to weed out job seekers that are sending form letters. Typos Typos can make a bad first impression and your cover letter is your first one. If your cover letter is filled with typos it could leave an impression you really don’t want to leave. Bad Grammar Using too much jargon, slang, personal, or outdated wording can also turn employers away. The more professional vocabulary used, the easier it will be for employers to get excited about and interested in your cover letter- and furthermore your resume. Too Wordy You have several really good accomplishments, years of experience, and are extremely versatile. Your cover letter is a great place to give employers an introduction into how great an employee you are. However, it should not be so long that employers lose interest. Keep your cover letter limited to your most prized accomplishments and past experiences to get the employers attention. The next time you send out your cover letter, make sure to proofread, edit, personalize, and make yourself unforgettable. Readers, what tricks do you use to write a standout cover letter?
